URBAN FLIGHT - CHERYL HAZAN GALLERY - NEW YORK, NY

For this series of work, I am attempting to simulate the raw aesthetic of today’s urban landscape. The works are primarily based on a conceptual flight examining parts of urban society that are most likely to be overlooked. More specifically, I am referring to the back streets, alleyways, walk throughs, train yards, etc in our cities and their unnoticed beauty. Abandoned and oversaturated with layers of paint, torn ads and graffiti on the walls, these places draw a significant resemblance to the movement and balance of an abstract painting. Usually, these places are considered the backstage of society and are missed or rather, dismissed and unappealing to the eye. Even though, when studied and closely observed, they can be aesthetically beautiful and profound. For me, I see that beauty and I create it within the limits of the canvases. I do this in order to contain the chaos and bring it to an environment in which the works can be viewed without distractions. My intention for this exhibit is to take the participants on a flight, an “urban flight”, in which they can see something familiar in a different social dynamic. By doing this I am commenting on today’s social based importance on beauty and how subjective this ideology is.

BOSQUE II - ASTOLFI ART - ATLANTA, GA

In their second two-person show Astolifi Fine Art Gallery is proud to present BOSQUE 2. In this exhibition, artists Anke Schofield and Luis Garcia-Nerey explore the aesthetics of, and the psychology behind, the forest. In this exhibit, the two artists compare the social dynamics and the hierarchy within forest animals in relations to our own society. Though both artists approach the subject matter in their own way, the premise remains the same. The focus is on how we, in society, collectively interpret the forest and its inhabitants and how this interpretation greatly resembles our own social conventions. Schofield and Nereys’ aim is to expand on those perceptions through visual interactions between the viewer and their paintings. Whether the comparison is literal or abstract their intentions are to invite the viewer to see the similarities between both worlds. BOSQUE - ART DEPARTMENT GALLERY - ATLANTA, GA

The Art Department Gallery is proud to present "BOSQUE" a two person show featuring artists Anke Scholfied and Luis Garcia-Nerey. For this specific exhibit both artists have focused on bringing forest elements to their own individual works. Although the artists do not typically use these elements the transition is proven to be fascinating. From their already rich and powerful paintings, emerge animals and tree's as if they had always existed there. "The concept behind the show was initially to inject forest thematics into our pieces". "From that, the project grew into more of a social commentary on the interaction between humans and animals and the roles they play on the enviroment". Both artist will be exhibiting various paintings along with a site specific installation. Please join us on February 6th @ 7pm for the opening to this extraordinary exhibition. Art Department Gallery . 327 Edgewood Avenue . Atlanta Georgia . 30312 . For more information please contact us at 678.732.0068

BABYLON @ CAROL JAZZAR CONTEMPORARY GALLERY

Carol Jazzar is proud to present Babylon, an installation by Luis Garcia-Nerey. With his upcoming exhibition, Babylon, Luis Garcia-Nerey compares today’s society with that of Babylon, the City of the ancient Mesopotamia. Babylon was a small town in it’s early years but sprung up into a major city by the beginning of the third Millennium BC, at the dawn of the dynasties. The city developed into a center of learning and scientific development. Babylon encouraged the study of literature, medicine, chemistry, mathematic, astronomy and architecture. Over-development was eventually it’s downfall. Garcia-Nerey believes that the same advances and possible fate exist in our society but the difference is in scale. “In today’s landscape, our society requires a more rapid pace (and more and more space) for growth; (resulting in) an overdevelopment of (the) community which ultimately leads to the recurrence of history” Garcia-Nerey’s ‘Babylon” deals directly with this growth and questions the components of a modern day Babylon, the overdevelopment of our cities (for us here, Miami) and our society at large. Using available, raw materials (like recycled pieces of woods), Garcia-Nerey will create an environment within the space where the viewer will become part of the piece. They will walk through a City surrounded by a maze of thousand of business-like men, all side by side on a pier like structure twinning through standing towers. The goal is to involve the viewer in a space in which they can immerse themselves in a modern day Babylon. It also explores the present state of our society and the “necessary or unnecessary growth of humanity”. Luis Garcia-Nerey has exhibited his work at the Albright-Knox Museum, NY; the Knoxville Museum of Art, TN; and is part of the permanent collection of the Museum of Latin American Art, CA. This is his first solo show with the Gallery. For more information, Carol Jazzar 305 490 6906 www.cjazzart.com
