Aliona Ortega Fine Art presents "Somewhere Over Water" a solo exhibition of recent works by Luis García Nerey

Aliona Ortega Fine Art is pleased to present “Somewhere over Water”, a solo exhibition of recent works by Luis Garcia Nerey. Garcia Nerey is a conceptual multimedia artist whose oeuvre shifts between abstract and representational art. His work investigates the subjects of identity, migration, exile, as well as individual and collective memory.

Garcia Nerey’s paintings always start as abstractions, and often times stay that way – purely abstract. Yet, sometimes, as the work progresses, figurative forms emerge on which the artist builds by applying layers of acrylic, oil, or tar. Sometimes the artist uses elements of collage that he works into his paintings. Resulting works vary in their representational or non-representational qualities and finishes: from exposed mixed media on canvas, to mixed media on panel under a layer of resin, to matte surfaces achieved through multiple steps of polishing and mattifying the epoxy resin to perfection. It is that variety that constitutes the selection of works in “Somewhere over Water”.

Luis Garcia Nerey was born in 1973 in Puerto Rico into a family of Cuban refugees. He moved to Miami, Florida, as a child. His education includes Long Island University (CW Post campus), Long Island New York, and the New World School of the Arts, in Miami. His work has been exhibited in multiple museum exhibitions. He lives and works in Miami.

“Somewhere over Water” opens to the public on Saturday, September 23, 5-9 p.m., and remains on view through October 28th, 2023. The artist will be present during the opening reception.

LUIS GARCIA-NEREY | SHIFTING LINES

EXHIBITION OVERVIEW

In a series of abstract paintings and site-specific installations throughout the Museum, Luis Garcia Nerey invites viewers to confront and explore one of the most basic theories of human existence: the idea of the Self and the Other. His work consists of constructed environments that often starkly juxtapose each other, showing the chasms that exist from one person’s lived reality to the next. Viewers are able to navigate these physical spaces and draw relevant conclusions themselves. In Shifting Lines, Garcia-Nerey literally leaves the door open to interpretation on subjects such as identity, inequality, and community. Visitors will be able to ask the artist questions at the reception and during an artist talk and other events to be held at the Museum.

Luis Garcia Nerey - Drifting Lines - Final Draft-1.jpg

In Dwelling, multimedia artist Luis Garcia Nerey constructs an environment that meditates on the connections and separations formed between home, community and development. The piece explores the narrative of cyclical patterns that recur through time and place while also questioning the biases created by the real and artificial borders that are inevitably present in everyday life.

Known for his interactive installations, Garcia Nerey creates works that provoke participants to navigate physical spaces in search of meaning. His paintings, sculptures and installations are informed by Constructionism Theory and rely on the viewer’s interaction with the pieces to negotiate symbiotic relationships between the Self and the Other.

Cheryl Hazan Gallery is pleased to present a group show featuring Hunt Slonem, Louise Crandell and Luis Garcia Nerey. The exhibition will be on view October 26 - December 9, 2017

Opening reception November 1, 6pm - 8pm

New York artist Hunt Slonem is renowned for his intense color and loosely expressive brushstrokes, inspired by nature. His longtime subject matter is exotic tropical birds, butterflies and monkeys that are at once pop culture and fine art.

His series of enchanting paintings are simple gestural oils that are at once pop culture and fine art. Working in series, each one of his artworks, is an examination of nature and a study in painting.

Slonem’s works can be found in the permanent collections of 250 museums around the world, including the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, the Whitney and the Miro.

“I was influenced by Warhol’s repetition of soups cans and Marilyns”, Slonem says, “but I’m more interested in doing it in a sense of prayer with repetition. It’s really a form of worship”.

With an evanescent architecture of light and dark - Louise Crandell’s oil and encaustic paintings limn the remembered spaces of a half forgotten dream. The softness and blur recall both Seurat’s charcoal drawings and Gerhard Richter’s photos. The places she creates are both familiar and archetypal, evoking a sense of déjà vu.

Crandell says, “Memory is a tricky thing. Despite that, I rely a great deal on my own.”

Luis Garcia Nerey’s latest series employs the silhouette of an ambiguously female figure as a representation of the Other. Nerey’s work addresses how existence is questionable without participation. Using “Constructionism Philosophy” as a conceptual base provides a theoretical approach. “The philosophy of the Self and the Other posits that all things need a counter or an Other to define them. The artist believes the interaction between a painting and a person may be equally important in creating that sense of Self, facilitating conversation between the paintings and the viewer.

“I believe that our existence depends on one another…As you interact with my work, you construct it and it constructs you.”

New To The Gallery
Kevin Boyle and Luis Garcia-Nerey
March 3 – April 30, 2017

Bellevue, WA – Beginning in March Hall Spassov Gallery is pleased to present two new artists for 2017.  The work of Luis Garcia-Nerey and Kevin Boyle are, at first, decidedly different from one another.  A closer examination of each artist’s intent reveals cross over in ideals and purpose. Both artists explore the notion that the group and the individual are interrelated and each uses varying degrees of abstraction, executed with extremely different methods, inviting the viewer to participate in the work.  Boyle, a photographer, uses both old and new technologies together inviting an inward look at our human nature. Garcia-Nerey, a painter and sculpture, explores a similar introspection and often incorporates photographs and found object to realize his intent. Boyles latest work, Herd, is a dramatic and beautiful look at natural hierarchy and the commonality between the human and the animal within a group.  Garcia-Nerey’s abstracted paintings shine a light on the way those two groups shape each other and in the artist’s own words “I believe that our existence depends on one another.”  “As you interact with my work, you construct it and it constructs you.”  Both artists, although different in nearly every visible way, share a reflective interest in the human condition and both have explored and manifested this interest with exacting skill and approach.

Join us for the opening: FIRST FRIDAY, March 3rd, from 5-8PM. This exhibition will run through April 30th.

FUNCTION+WILL @ GENERAL AUDIENCE PRESENTS OPENING RECEPTION JUNE 6TH 6-9PM MIAMI

FUNCTION+WILL @ GENERAL AUDIENCE PRESENTS OPENING RECEPTION JUNE 6TH 6-9PM MIAMI

In his latest installation @ General Audience Present, artist Luis Garcia-Nerey explores his ongoing fascination with interaction through Function + Will. The artist invites the audience to step up onto risers and insert themselves through openings in the ceiling to see what there is above. The installation spans the length of the gallery, dividing it into opposing active and inactive spaces. Within this division, a contrasting point occurs exploring the function of the installation versus the willingness of the audience’s participation. What transpires as a result is a pseudo ritualistic dynamic intended to stir discussion not only on choice and meaning but modern day society and the paradox of religion.

His paintings incorporate many layers of excavation, mark making, washes, and broad expanses of colors. The subtle narrative that is embedded in his work deals with the dynamics between Self and Other. Garcia-Nerey is interested in the concept that all things are countered by the existence of another, including the Self. Amidst this narrative he also intends his works to influence the viewer in many different directions, with no limits and little explanation. There is an elegant tension that pushes and pulls the surface with texture, line, and depth."
